Preparing for the Growth Season

According to a 2016 study by the Pew Research Center, a majority (73%) of adults in the United States comsider themselves to be lifelong learners. The majority of these adults indicated that their learning opportunities took place in physical places, for example, schools, libraries, and places of worship. What can we make of this research? The church is still considered to be a place for learning, and the majority of adults want to learn. What do we do about it? Continue to offer challenging and engaging opportunities for adults in our church communities to learn about and grow in the Christian faith.

Preparing for the Growth Season

Prepare for the Growing SeasonAs the church, we are in the season of Lent, a time of preparation. In terms of the calendar, we are entering another time of preparation: spring, and the early stages of the growing season.  I am not a gardener, but I have the good fortune to know some seasoned pros at horticulture. They use the winter to look through seed catalogs, to read more about cultivating specific plants that grow well in their particular area, to plan this year’s garden lay out, all to prepare for the next stage. Preparation at this next stage involves preparing the soil for planting. In terms of Bible study, this metaphor of preparing for the growing season involves utilizing tools that will give adults the best foundation from which to grow in understanding as they read and study the Bible.  Because The Kerygma Program is committed to helping adults understand the Bible whole, i.e. the individual books within the entire canon, we provide resources to “prepare the soil” for planting. Consider offering the adults in your church learning opportunities that provide a good foundation for further study of Biblical books and themes.
